SmartLipo vs. Liposuction: What’s The Difference?

If you are considering Lipo it is time to look at your options. This article considers recovery time, desired results, and the actual operation of Liposuction and SmartLipo so you can make the decision that is right for you.

SmartLipo is an alternative to the traditional liposuction procedure. This method was approved by the FDA in 2006. If you are considering a fat removal procedure liposuction and SmartLipo will be the options you need to consider. Both have their benefits for different reasons. Here are some facts about each so you can do your own research and discuss your options with your surgeon. Atlanta plastic surgeons at Perimeter Plastic Surgery are ready when you are to start a Liposuction consultation.

  • Traditional Liposuction
  • Liposuction remains one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the U.S. annually. The traditional method uses a cannula to suction the fatty cells from the body. Liposuction can be used on almost any part of the body making it a versatile and sought after procedure. Liposuction has been around for a long time and it is regarded as one of the safest and most common surgical procedures.
  • SmartLipo
  • This method introduces lasers to the traditional liposuction method. This procedure melts the fatty cells and makes extraction via suction easier. SmartLipo is also referred to as laser liposuction or laser lipolysis.
  • Similarities and Differences
    • Both procedures have a similar goal of removing fat to reshape and contour the patient’s body in a more aesthetic way. Both procedures are considered surgery, though SmartLipo is slightly less invasive compared to traditional liposuction. The two differ slightly; however, these differences affect the actual procedure and recovery time.
      • In terms of anesthesia, you will need it regardless of the procedure you choose. For traditional liposuction you will be asleep under general anesthesia; whereas, during the SmartLipo procedure you can be awake and only need local anesthesia.
      • Recovery time also differs. For the traditional liposuction you will need several weeks to recover. You will likely experience bruising, swelling, and soreness for the duration of the healing process and wear compression garments for up to six weeks. For the SmartLipo procedure you will need to wear compression garments for about a week and while the recovery is shorter, you will still need to wait about four weeks to return to strenuous activities. Additionally, there is a difference in skin tightening results. Talk with your doctor to assess which is right for you.
    • So which is right for you?
  • Often, if you are not looking to take off a lot of mass and are trying to minimize the recovery time SmartLipo is probably right for you. On the other hand, if you are looking to remove a considerable amount of fat and are not necessarily interested in the skin tightening result then traditional liposuction would suit you best. Depending on your body type and needs Liposuction can usually meet anyone’s needs. Talk to a board certified surgeon, Dr. Duetsch, an Atlanta plastic surgeon, about what is right for you.
