What is the Surgical Process for Breast Implants?

Breast augmentation via plastic surgery in Atlanta is a procedure to enhance and accentuate the shape and size of your breasts. This involves the placement of breast implants under the breast tissue or chest muscles. This procedure gives many women a reason to feel confident. For some others, it is part of rebuilding breast tissue. If you are considering breast augmentation in Atlanta, it is crucial to understand what the procedure involves, its complications, possible risks, and follow-up care.

Why Breast Augmentation?

  • It is a procedure that enhances your breasts if you are unhappy with their size or if one is smaller than the other.
  • Corrects unevenness of breasts after breast surgery for other conditions
  • Improves self-confidence
  • Adjusts for a change in the size of breasts post-pregnancy

Risks Involved in a Breast Augmentation Procedure

Although rare, there are some risks involved with opting for a breast augmentation procedure. A few risks include:

  • Scar tissue formation that can distort the shape of the implant
  • Infections post-surgery
  • Implant leakage
  • Changes in sensation in the breasts
  • Pain in the breasts

Correcting the above complications may call for more surgery that can involve removal or replacing of the implants.

During the Procedure

To insert the implant, the plastic surgeon will make a slight incision in one of three places – under your arm, in the crease of the breast, or around the nipple. Once the cut is made, the doctor will then  separate the breast tissue from the connective tissues and muscles of the chest. Doing so allows for a pocket to be created either behind or in front of the outermost muscle of the pectoral group of muscles that make up the chest wall. Next, the implant is slipped into its pocket and is centered behind the nipple.

In all implant surgeries, saline implants are slipped in empty and then later filled up with sterile water once they are seated in place. Silicone implants, on the other hand, are already filled with silicone gel. Once the implant is in its place, the surgeon will close up the cut with sutures. The cut is then bandaged with gauze, skin adhesive, and tape.

After the Augmentation Procedure

Swelling and soreness is common and to be expected soon after the procedure. It is likely to persist a few weeks before it fades off. Often, breast implantation surgery causes some  bruising but scars tend to fade with time.

When healing, doctors recommend using a compression bandage that will give the implants support while allowing them to settle in place. If you do not have a physically demanding job, you can return to work in 3-4 weeks. If your doctor used sutures that do not self-absorb, you may need to schedule an appointment to have them removed. If you notice any warmth or redness or are running a low-grade fever for more than a day, you must contact your doctor.

Breast augmentation is a relatively low risk  procedure and has great results. It will make you feel young and beautiful and is absolutely worth the cost.
