Living With Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition that can be quite dangerous if it is not treated. Those who suffer from this condition will find that they stop breathing while they sleep. Their breathing starts again but it can be a few seconds before it does.

The Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Some of the symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Breathing that stops and starts again
  • Waking up many times in the night
  • Making choking, snorting, or gasping noises
  • Snoring loudly
  • Feeling quite tired during the day
  • Having a headache when you wake
  • Experiencing mood swings
  • Finding it hard to concentrate

Many people are unaware that they have sleeping issues until their partner mentions it. Their loud snoring can be quite disturbing and cause issues for their loved-one. However, once the right treatment is administered the sufferer could find that they sleep better than ever.

How To Live With Sleep Apnea

– Visit Your Dentist

Did you know that those who suffer from sleep apnea often have dental issues? Many people grind their teeth while they sleep, others find their gums are irritated or they have cavities.  Visiting your dentist to undergo some preventive dentistry can make a lot of difference. While your dentist cannot cure your sleep apnea, they can at least deal with some of the symptoms.

– Lose Weight

It’s thought that 50% of people with sleep apnea are overweight. Losing weight can help to prevent snoring and other symptoms associated with this condition. Think about getting some exercise or increasing the amount of exercise you do. Not only can exercise help you to lose weight, but it can also help you to sleep better at night.

– Try To Sleep Better

Not getting enough sleep can make sleep apnea worse. Try to improve the quality of your sleep by cutting down on your caffeine intake. If you must have a hot drink before you go to bed opt for caffeine-free beverages. You should also consider taking the television out of your bedroom so you’re not tempted to stay up late and watch it. Finally, go to bed and get out of bed at the same time every day. Try not to have a lie-in even if you’re feeling tired.

Treatment For Sleep Apnea

Your doctor might suggest that you use a CPAP machine while you sleep. This is a machine that sends oxygen through a mask that you wear over your nose or mouth while you sleep. A CPAP machine can help you to breathe better while also improving your sleep quality. In addition to this, a machine can help to reduce the likelihood of you having high blood pressure.

There are also other treatments for this condition. You could, for example, wear a gum shield that keeps your airways open while you sleep. Alternatively, if you have large tonsils you could find that having them removed can help you to breathe a little better.

Sleep apnea does not have to control your life. With a bit of work, you could sleep better than ever before.
